The Texas Dept. of Health offers West Nile prevention tips to protect your health. The best way to avoid becoming infected is to prevent mosquito bites. There are "Four D's" to remember: DEET, Dress, Dusk and Dawn, and Drain:

Tip 1: Apply insect repellent that contains DEET.

Tip 2: Dress in long sleeves and pants.

Tip 3: Stay indoors at dusk and dawn, the times when infected mosquitoes are most active.

Tip 4: Drain standing water in your backyard and neighborhood.

Although most infected by West Nile virus will not have any signs of illness, 20% who become infected will have fever, headache, body ache, swollen lymph glands, and possibly a skin rash.

Symptoms of sever infection include neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness, and paralysis. Only one out of 150 people infected with the West Nile virus develeop severe symptoms, which can lead to death.
